What is a visa?

A visa is an authorization granted by the Uruguayan authorities to foreign nationals whose nationalities require one, allowing them to present themselves at an immigration checkpoint and request entry into Uruguay. A visa is granted for a specific purpose and certifies that its holder has previously met the requirements corresponding to the category requested.

Depending on the purpose of travel, visas are available for tourism, business, work, study, family reunification, humanitarian and emergency purposes, and for conferences, conventions and seminars.

Obtaining a visa does not, in itself, confer an automatic right to enter the national territory. Final admission is determined by the National Directorate of Migration - DNM (Dirección Nacional de Migración), which will verify compliance with the conditions established by the regulations in force at the point of entry.

Please consult the Visa Admission Regime for Foreign Nationals (Régimen de visas de admisión para extranjeros) of the Ministry of the Interior (Ministerio del Interior) in advance to verify whether, based on your nationality, you require a visa to enter Uruguay.

Important note: Applicants are advised to initiate their visa application at least 50 days before their intended date of travel.

Who may complete this procedure before a Consulate?

Foreign nationals whose nationality requires a visa to enter the Oriental Republic of Uruguay.

If applicable, and you wish to submit a visa application at the Consulate General of Uruguay in Guangzhou, the specific requirements are as follows:

• Tourist Visa (Visa de turismo)

A tourist visa may be requested by persons wishing to enter the country temporarily for pleasure, recreation or leisure.

Authorized stay: If the visa is granted, the authorized period of stay in Uruguay will be 90 days, which may be extended once in Uruguay for an additional 90 days before the National Directorate of Migration (Dirección Nacional de Migración). The tourist visa will allow multiple entries during its period of validity.

Visa validity: The holder must enter Uruguay within 180 days from the date on which the visa is granted and stamped.

Requirements

• A valid passport in good condition, with at least six months of validity remaining from the intended date of entry into Uruguay.
• Complete travel itinerary, including outbound and return ticket reservations.
• Accommodation reservation covering the entire intended period of stay in Uruguay.
• Documentation demonstrating sufficient income or financial means to cover living expenses during the stay.
• An explanatory letter stating the purpose of the trip, the intended travel dates and the length of stay in Uruguay.
• Duly completed visa application form, available at the end of this page.
• A recent digital photograph, taken in good lighting against a white background, in a square format measuring 1200 × 1200 pixels.
• An interview with the consular officer, the date of which will be arranged once the application has been received and the submitted documentation verified.

• Work Visa (Visa de trabajo)

A work visa may be requested by persons intending to undertake employment in Uruguay.

Authorized stay: This will depend on the applicable immigration subcategory, whether permanent or temporary resident, in accordance with Articles 10 and 11 of Decree No. 394/009 of August 24, 2009. The visa holder will have 30 days from the date of entry into the country to apply for residence.

Visa validity and entries into Uruguay: The visa will be valid for 60 days from the date on which it is granted and stamped. The work visa will allow a single entry.

Requirements

• A valid passport in good condition, with at least six months of validity remaining from the intended date of entry into Uruguay.
• A letter containing an offer of employment or an employment contract issued by a company or institution duly registered in Uruguay, in accordance with the national regulations in force. It must include the company’s details, information on its field of activity, registration numbers with the General Tax Directorate (Dirección General Impositiva – DGI) and the Social Security Bank (Banco de Previsión Social – BPS), as well as the personal details and signature of the company’s legal representative.
• Complete travel itinerary, including outbound and return ticket reservations.
• Duly completed visa application form, available at the end of this page.
• A recent digital photograph, taken in good lighting against a white background, in a square format measuring 1200 × 1200 pixels.
• An interview with the consular officer, the date of which will be arranged once the application has been received and the submitted documentation verified.

• Business Visa (Visa de negocios)

A business visa may be requested by persons wishing to enter the country to conduct business activities or for investment or commercial exchange purposes with Uruguayan companies, companies based in Uruguay or public agencies.

Authorized stay: If the visa is granted, the authorized period of stay in Uruguay will be 90 days, which may be extended once in Uruguay for an additional 90 days before the National Directorate of Migration (Dirección Nacional de Migración). The business visa will allow multiple entries during its period of validity.

Visa validity: The holder must enter Uruguay within 180 days from the date on which the visa is granted and stamped.

Requirements

• A valid passport in good condition, with at least six months of validity remaining from the intended date of entry into Uruguay.
• A letter from the company, office or public agency in Uruguay issuing the invitation. It must be on official letterhead and signed by the responsible authority of the company, office or public agency. The letter must include the personal details of the representative of the company inviting the visa applicant.
• A letter from the applicant’s employer indicating the purpose of the trip, the applicant’s position, the company’s registered name and its field of activity.
• Complete travel itinerary, including outbound and return ticket reservations.
• Accommodation reservation or appropriate proof of accommodation covering the entire intended period of stay in Uruguay.
• Duly completed visa application form, available at the end of this page.
• A recent digital photograph, taken in good lighting against a white background, in a square format measuring 1200 × 1200 pixels.
• An interview with the consular officer, the date of which will be arranged once the application has been received and the submitted documentation verified.

• Study Visa (Visa de estudio)

A study visa may be requested by persons intending to pursue studies, undertake scholarships or participate in internships under official, governmental or exchange programs at institutions accredited or authorized by the relevant official agencies.

Authorized stay: 30 days. The visa holder will have 30 days from the date of entry into the country to apply for temporary residence.

Entries into Uruguay: The visa will be valid for 180 days from the date on which it is granted and stamped. The study visa will allow a single entry.

Requirements

• A valid passport in good condition, with at least six months of validity remaining from the intended date of entry into Uruguay.
• Documentation demonstrating sufficient income or financial means to cover living expenses during the stay.
• Proof of enrollment or a letter from the public or private educational institution or center where the applicant will pursue studies, undertake a scholarship or participate in an internship. It must be on official letterhead, signed by the institution’s legal representative and include the representative’s personal details, as well as the institution’s registration or authorization number issued by the Ministry of Education and Culture (Ministerio de Educación y Cultura).
• Complete travel itinerary, including outbound and return ticket reservations.
• Duly completed visa application form, available at the end of this page.
• A recent digital photograph, taken in good lighting against a white background, in a square format measuring 1200 × 1200 pixels.
• An interview with the consular officer, the date of which will be arranged once the application has been received and the submitted documentation verified.
   

• Visa for National or International Conferences, Conventions and Seminars (Visa de congresos, convenciones y seminarios con carácter nacional o internacional)

This type of visa may be requested by persons who provide evidence of an invitation from the organizers of a national or international event of public interest to be held in Uruguay.

Authorized stay: If the visa is granted, the authorized period of stay in Uruguay will be 90 days, which may be extended once in Uruguay for an additional 90 days before the National Directorate of Migration (Dirección Nacional de Migración). The visa will allow multiple entries during its period of validity.

Visa validity: The holder must enter Uruguay within 180 days from the date on which the visa is granted and stamped.

Requirements

• A valid passport in good condition, with at least six months of validity remaining from the intended date of entry into Uruguay.
• A letter of invitation from the event organizer. In the case of private institutions or organizations, the letter must include a description of the institution and the event to be held, as well as the institution’s registration or authorization number issued by the Ministry of Education and Culture (Ministerio de Educación y Cultura). It must also include the details of the person responsible for the institution or organization.
• A document certifying the public-interest nature of the event.
• Complete travel itinerary, including outbound and return ticket reservations.
• Duly completed visa application form, available at the end of this page.
• A recent digital photograph, taken in good lighting against a white background, in a square format measuring 1200 × 1200 pixels.
• An interview with the consular officer, the date of which will be arranged once the application has been received and the submitted documentation verified.

How is the procedure completed?

• Complete the application form available for download at the end of this page.
• Gather the required documentation applicable to your circumstances and visa category.
• Request an appointment by emailing cgcanton@mrree.gub.uy and attaching the duly completed application form and digital copies of the corresponding documentation.
• The Consulate will review the documentation and inform you whether any corrections, additional documents or translations are required. Once the requirements have been verified, the date and time of the appointment will be assigned.
• Appear in person on the assigned date and at the assigned time for the interview, bringing all original documentation.

Cost

USD 54, payable in Chinese yuan (RMB). The amount payable in local currency will be determined according to the exchange rate in effect at the time the procedure is completed. Payment must be made by bank deposit using the account details provided on the day of the appointment. The fee covers the initiation of the application and the eventual stamping of the visa and is therefore non-refundable if the visa is denied.
