Uruguay and China reaffirm their ties through basketball
The matches were played on 13 and 15 August at the new Desheng Sports Center, inaugurated in 2025 and located in Shunde District, Foshan, Guangdong Province. The series concluded with one victory for each national team and served as preparation for the upcoming stages of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Qualifiers.
The tour also marked the first meeting between the two countries’ senior men’s national teams in 42 years. Their previous official encounter recorded by FIBA took place on 4 August 1984, during the preliminary round of the Los Angeles Olympic Games. On that occasion, Uruguay defeated China 74–67 and subsequently finished the tournament in sixth place.
In addition to the sporting activities, the visit provided an opportunity to advance the institutional dialogue between the two federations. FUBB President Héctor Assir met with Chinese Basketball Association President Guo Zhenming. During the meeting, they exchanged ideas on strengthening the existing areas of collaboration and expressed mutual satisfaction with the results and understandings achieved during the tour.
The Embassy of Uruguay in China and the Consulate General of Uruguay in Guangzhou assisted with the preparations for the visit and accompanied the Uruguayan delegation during both matches played in Foshan. Both representations will continue to support the dialogue established and follow up on future exchanges and cooperation between the federations.
The visit provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen ties between the sporting institutions of Uruguay and China, deepen mutual understanding and explore new avenues of cooperation both on and off the court. It is hoped that these encounters will mark the beginning of a lasting relationship between the two federations and national teams, in line with the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Uruguay and China, which recognizes sports cooperation and stronger dialogue and coordination on international sporting matters as important components of the bilateral relationship.
