General Power of Attorney or Special Power of Attorney
Who is it for?
To people of legal age who wish to grant a power of attorney to a third party who is in Uruguay, so that he/she, in their name and representation, can carry out the procedure for which authorization is granted.
How do I start the procedure?
To start the procedure, you must have the following documentation:
1. Valid identity document of the grantor
2. Copy of the valid identity document of the proxy
3. Information on the marital status and address of both parties
4. Draft or template of the Power of Attorney to be granted
5. Request an appointment by sending an email to: cgsydney@mrree.gub.uy, attaching the corresponding documentation, and indicating in the subject of the email the requested procedure.
6. Present yourself in person with the complete documentation on the day of the appointment.
7. Cost: 420 Australian dollars corresponding to the issuance of the first copy. The amount may vary according to the current exchange rate between the Australian dollar and the US dollar. Payment is made by bank deposit on the day of the appointment.
What to do once the Power of Attorney has been granted?
Once the Power of Attorney has been issued by the Consulate General, the document must be formalized:
Step 1: Once the first copy of the Power of Attorney issued by the Consulate General has been obtained, and in order to be valid in Uruguay, the signature of the acting consular officer must be first legalized by the Legalizations and Apostilles Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay, located at 1384 Cuareim Street, Montevideo.
Step 2: Once the consular officer’s signature has been legalized, the Power of Attorney must be registered before a Notary Public in Uruguay in order to have legal effect within the national territory.
