Return to Uruguay
Who can apply for this procedure?
Individuals born in Uruguay, children of Uruguayans born abroad (Law 16.021), grandchildren of Uruguayans born abroad (Law 19.362), and those who may qualify under Article 76 of Law 18.250 or Decree 139/014, for their return process to the Republic.
1) Return under Article 76 of Law 18.250 and Regulatory Decree 330/08
This allows a one-time and definitive return to Uruguay, bringing with you household goods, professional tools, and/or a motor vehicle that is registered in your name and has been in your possession for at least one year.
You will be exempt from all currency exchange procedures, customs duties, taxes, and tariffs upon entering Uruguay, provided you can prove continuous and permanent residence abroad for at least two years.
It is recommended to begin this process at least one month prior to your travel date.
Requirements:
- Original and copy of valid Uruguayan ID card and/or passport of the returnee(s)
- All visas granted to the applicant
- Printed and signed list of household goods by the applicant (handwritten lists or packing lists from moving companies are not accepted). This list must comply with the conditions outlined in the Return Manual
- Original and copy of the vehicle registration certificate or purchase invoice, duly certified and apostilled
- Printed and signed list of professional tools or equipment, separate from the list of household goods (handwritten lists or packing lists from moving companies are not accepted). Basic domestic tools must be included in the household goods list
- Original proof of professional activity (job letter, licence, certificate, etc.). If not in Spanish, it must be officially translated
Notes:
- If the vehicle is under a financial loan or lien, it cannot be imported until the debt is fully settled. The one-year ownership period is calculated from the date of final payment
- If married under a community property regime, submit the spouse’s ID and the marriage certificate, duly apostilled (if not Uruguayan). Uruguayan marriage documents do not require apostille
- If married under a separation of assets regime, submit the corresponding public document, duly apostilled
- The vehicle cannot be sold or transferred for two years after entering Uruguay and must be registered at the local Departmental Government within 30 days of customs clearance and release

Once you have reviewed all the above requirements, request an appointment by emailing cgsydney@mrree.gub.uy, attaching all required documentation.
You will receive a confirmation with the date and time to attend the Consulate in person.

2) Return under Decree 139/014
Allows return to Uruguay as many times as necessary, bringing household goods and professional tools.
Motor vehicles cannot be imported under this regime.

- Certificate of Residence: 168 Australian dollars
- Endorsement of Household Goods List: 224 Australian dollars
- Sworn Declaration of Return: Free of charge
- Acknowledgement of Receipt of Documents: Free of charge
If returning with professional tools, the following additional documents will be issued:
- Endorsement of List of Professional Tools or Equipment: 224 Australian dollars
- Proof of Employment or Income: Free of charge
