Return to the Republic
Return under Article 76 of Law No. 18.250 and Regulatory Decree No. 330/08
Return to Uruguay permanently and for a single time, bringing personal belongings, professional tools and/or a motor vehicle registered in your name with a minimum of one year of ownership.
You will be exempt from all foreign exchange procedures and from all customs duties, taxes, or tariff charges upon entry into Uruguay, provided you demonstrate that you have resided abroad continuously and permanently for at least two years.
It is recommended to initiate this procedure at least one month before your trip.
Requirements
- Original and copy of valid and in good condition Uruguayan identity card and/or passport of the returning person(s).
- Printed and signed list of personal belongings (handwritten lists or packing lists from shipping companies are not accepted). This list must comply with the conditions set out in the Return Manual.
- Original and copy of vehicle title or purchase invoice, duly authenticated and apostilled.
- Printed and signed list of professional tools or machinery (handwritten lists or packing lists from shipping companies are not accepted). This list must be prepared separately from the personal belongings list. Simple household tools must be included in the personal belongings list.
- Original certificate of employment, profession, trade, or other documentation proving professional activity.
Note:
- If the vehicle is under a financial lien, it cannot be returned until fully paid off; the one-year ownership period is counted from the date of full payment.
- If married under a “community property regime,” submit the spouse’s identity document and marriage certificate or record duly apostilled (Uruguayan documents do not require apostille). If married under “separation of property,” submit the corresponding public documentation duly apostilled (Uruguayan documents do not require apostille).
- The vehicle may not be sold or transferred for a period of two years from entry into Uruguay and must be registered with the local departmental government within 30 days after customs clearance and release.
Once you have carefully reviewed all requirements above, request an appointment by email at cgtoronto@mrree.gub.uy, attaching the required documents.
After verification, you will receive the appointment details to attend the Consulate on the indicated date and time.

Return under Decree No. 139/014

Who it is intended for:
Persons born in Uruguay, children of Uruguayans born abroad (Law No. 16.021), and grandchildren of Uruguayans born abroad (Law No. 19.362), who may apply under Article 76 of Law No. 18.250 or Decree No. 139/014 to carry out their return process to the Republic.
