Uruguayan Film Series at York University – Toronto

This Consulate General continues to sponsor and co-organize the cultural initiative entitled the "Uruguayan Film Series at York University – Toronto," in collaboration with the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics of the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University.

In this regard, it is appropriate to acknowledge the valuable contribution of Professor María Luján Figueredo, Ph.D., a distinguished Uruguayan academic, whose commitment, professional expertise, and logistical support have been essential to the successful implementation of this cultural initiative.

The above-mentioned event was held at the facilities of York University. On Thursday, 25 June of the current year, the film "Julio, Happy Forever," directed by Juan Manuel Solé, was screened. The film invites audiences to follow Julio, a young tour guide in the historic city of Colonia del Sacramento, whose life takes an unexpected turn after meeting Claire, a visitor from the United States. Through a sensitive blend of humor and reflection, the film explores contemporary human relationships, offering a warm and engaging perspective on love, personal aspirations, the challenges posed by distance, and the complexities of building meaningful relationships in an increasingly globalized and interconnected world.

The screening was attended by a modest yet diverse and representative audience of approximately twenty participants. In this connection, it is worth highlighting the attendance of Camila Bonifaz, Coordinator of the Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean (CERLAC); Jaime Libaque, member of the Spanish Language Cultural Celebration associated with the Peruvian Cultural Centre in Toronto; as well as international students residing in the city of Toronto.

The event provided an opportunity to further promote Uruguayan cinema and culture among members of the Canadian academic community and the general public, while contributing to the strengthening of Uruguay's cultural outreach and the enhancement of bilateral cultural ties through academic cooperation.
