A global benchmark event in the areas of innovation and digital transformation

Between 11 and 14 May of the current year, Uruguay participated in the second North American edition of the technology conference Web Summit Vancouver 2026, held in the Province of British Columbia. The event is recognized as a global benchmark in the fields of innovation, technological entrepreneurship, and digital transformation.

As in 2025, Web Summit Vancouver 2026 transformed the Canadian city into a global technology hub, bringing together more than 20,000 attendees from over 100 countries, nearly 1,200 startups, and more than 700 investors, thereby consolidating the event’s second edition on Canada’s west coast.

The following key points, themes, and overall analysis of the event are highlighted:

  • Artificial Intelligence dominates the narrative

Artificial Intelligence was the central focus of the event, although with a clear shift in perspective: the era of simple demonstrations has come to an end. Discussions have matured toward issues of feasibility, real-world market deployment, and the need to balance technological acceleration with public trust.

  • Data Sovereignty and Infrastructure

The concentration of Large Language Models (LLMs) in only four countries (Canada, France, China, and the United States) set the tone for discussions on technological sovereignty. In response, emphasis was placed on the need to retain intellectual property and data centers within national territories. The Provincial Government, together with partners such as TELUS, announced investments aimed at developing AI data center clusters in British Columbia, in order to ensure infrastructure sovereignty.

  • Focus on Creativity and Cultural Innovation

The event included specialized forums such as the Games Summit and the Film Summit. With the participation of industry leaders in entertainment and visual effects, including Sony Pictures Imageworks and Walt Disney Animation Studios, discussions focused on how technology enhances imagination and human talent, emphasizing that artistic creativity cannot be fully automated.

  • Trust and the Human Factor

As Artificial Intelligence continues to expand its ability to generate content, the value of human relationships, specialized professional judgment, and genuine credibility became some of the most discussed topics among attendees. Organizations have begun to evaluate not only what technology can replace, but also which forms of human contribution provide truly irreplaceable value.

Overall Perspective

The event demonstrated that the innovation ecosystem of British Columbia and Canada is currently undergoing a phase of maturity and global expansion. The success of the region’s approximately 600 AI companies, combined with strong access to financing, positions Canada as a competitive player capable of attracting international talent and investment.

The fundamental role played by Uruguay XXI in organizing and coordinating Uruguay’s participation is particularly noteworthy. The national delegation included six Uruguayan technology startups, which represented the country’s innovative ecosystem with professionalism and dynamism. Uruguay’s stand was one of the high-traffic areas within the exhibition space, generating multiple strategic contacts with potential investors, business partners, and industry representatives from North America and other regions.

In conclusion, Uruguay’s participation in Web Summit Vancouver 2026 represented a strategic opportunity to showcase Uruguay in a highly visible global environment, expand networks within the Canadian technology market, and strengthen the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector as one of the pillars of the country’s new productive model.
