What Can the Consulate Do for You?
- Issue and renew passports.
- Issue passports and travel permits for minors with the legally required consent of the holders of parental authority.
- Register children/grandchildren of Uruguayan citizens born in Canada (Toronto General Consulate jurisdiction).
- Process Return to Uruguay procedures.
- Authorize all acts that may be carried out by Public Notaries.
- Issue certificates of existence / proof of life for pension beneficiaries.
- Assist persons involved in accidents.
- Inform relatives or close contacts about accidents, deaths, or disasters, and provide guidance.
- Take interest in nationals who are detained or imprisoned and, under certain circumstances (to transmit messages to relatives).
- Protect the interests of minors or legally disability people, particularly regarding guardianship or trusteeship matters.
- Ensure that citizens subject to legal proceedings receive proper legal defense.
- Request information on the whereabouts of persons from local authorities.
- Attend to the interests of nationals in inheritance matters arising from death.
- Seek communication with family members or close contacts to inform them of a person’s situation and needs.
- Provide guidance regarding legal, medical, notarial assistance, etc.
What Can the Consulate Not Do for You?
- Act as a party in judicial proceedings or secure exemption from imprisonment.
- Provide legal representation or initiate judicial proceedings on your behalf.
- Obtain preferential treatment compared to nationals of the country in hospitals or prisons.
- Carry out tasks corresponding to travel agencies, airlines, banks, etc.
- Provide tickets or means to return to Uruguay or continue travel elsewhere, except under very special repatriation circumstances.
- Provide money or assume responsibility for payment of your bills (hotel, legal, medical, or any other expenses).
- Arrange accommodation, residency, employment, or work permits, nor act as your guarantor or sponsor.
