Australia / Uruguayan Leadership on the Global Stage
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, we celebrate Uruguayan women who inspire and make a lasting impact beyond our borders.

Today, we highlight Dr Estela Valverde, a pioneer of Latin American Studies in Australia, whose distinguished career reflects the talent, vision and global impact of Uruguayan women.
Through her academic, cultural and educational work, holding key roles within the Australian higher education system, she has contributed to building strong bridges between Latin America and Australia. Her career is distinguished by the following roles and contributions:
- Honorary Associate Professor, University of Sydney
- Leading academic and pioneer in Latin American Studies and the promotion of Spanish in Australia, with a career dedicated to strengthening ties between Australia and Latin America
- Founder and director of Latin American Studies Departments at Western Sydney University, The University of Queensland, and Macquarie University
- Held leadership positions such as Head of the Department of International Studies at Macquarie University and Director of the Language for Export Research Centre
- Director of the Human Rights Film Festival at Macquarie University for more than 10 years
- Author of an extensive body of academic work, including a notable book on Uruguayan writer Teresa Porzecanski, and her most recent co-authored publication, Transitional Justice, Impunity and the Judicialisation of Politics
- Founder of The Thinkologists, an initiative promoting bilingual education, inclusive communication, and global citizenship
