Canberra / Celebrating Uruguayan audiovisual production in Australia

Uruguay at the HSBC Spanish & Latin American Film Festival 2026

On Tuesday 23 June, the Embassy of Uruguay in Australia celebrated Uruguayan audiovisual production with a special screening of A Loose End (Un Cabo Suelto) in Canberra, organised in collaboration with Palace Cinemas as part of the HSBC Spanish & Latin American Film Festival 2026.

As a cultural partner of the Festival, the Embassy supported the presentation of this Uruguayan production directed by Daniel Hendler, bringing Australian audiences closer to the talent, creativity, and storytelling that characterise contemporary Uruguayan cinema.

The event also offered a cultural experience inviting guests to discover some of Uruguay’s most representative flavours. Attendees enjoyed a selection of Uruguayan wines, including Tannat from Bodega Garzón and Albariño from Bodega Bouza, alongside empanadas, alfajores, and ojitos, reflecting the gastronomy and hospitality of our country.

The gathering brought together Australians, members of the Spanish-speaking community, and Uruguayans in Canberra, creating a warm space for exchange around art, culture, and Uruguayan identity.

Held across different cities in Australia, the HSBC Spanish & Latin American Film Festival 2026 establishes itself as a key platform for the international promotion of Spanish-language cinema. In this context, A Loose End (Un Cabo Suelto) premiered in Australia, offering local audiences the chance to discover one of the latest works of Uruguayan cinema.

Those interested in watching the film can still check upcoming screenings and the Festival program across different Australian cities here.

We extend our special thanks to Palace Cinemas and to the organisers of the HSBC Spanish & Latin American Film Festival for supporting this valuable initiative, which strengthens cultural exchange, contributes to the development of the creative industries, and deepens ties between Uruguay, Latin America, and Australia.

We also thank all attendees for joining this celebration of Uruguayan cinema, increasingly recognised internationally for its quality, creativity, and talent.
