Uruguay at the National Archives of Australia

The relationship between Uruguay and Australia has been built across generations through exchange, cooperation and mutual interest between both countries. Part of this history is now preserved at the National Archives of Australia.
Among the historical documents conserved are records relating to a special Australian mission sent to Montevideo in 1951 on the occasion of Uruguay’s presidential transition. Also preserved are communications relating to Dr Gallinal’s visit to Australia in the 1930s, undertaken to conduct research in strategic sectors such as agriculture and livestock farming, providing early evidence of technical cooperation and knowledge exchange between the two countries.
More than archives, these documents tell stories. Stories of people, institutions and generations that helped build bridges between Uruguay and Australia long before the digital era.
For those visiting Canberra, or already here, the National Archives of Australia offers the opportunity to explore part of this shared history. More information here.
We extend our special thanks to the National Archives of Australia for their work in preserving this shared memory and for keeping alive the stories and shared values that continue to strengthen the ties between Uruguay and Australia.
