Uruguay and Republic of Fiji

Uruguay and Fiji: Dialogue and Shared Values. Bilateral relations have been strengthened through active cooperation in international forums. Both countries share a strong commitment to the defence of human rights, multilateralism, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Cooperation in Human Rights

Of particular note is the joint participation in an informal human rights group aimed at preventing reprisals against human rights defenders who collaborate with United Nations bodies. This initiative reflects the common commitment to the protection of fundamental values at a global level.

Political Dialogue and Mutual Support

In the political sphere, Fiji has expressed its support for various candidacies of Uruguay, recognising the active and constructive role of our country on the international scene. A close dialogue on climate change has also been maintained.

Sports Exchange and Cultural Diplomacy

The relations between the two countries has also had a component of cultural and sport diplomacy, highlighted by the visit to Uruguay of legendary Fijian rugby players, as well as the presence of the Fijian national rugby team. Such exchanges have contributed to closer ties between the two peoples.

Potential for Expansion 

While geographical distances present challenges, both countries recognise the strategic value of building ties with countries that share principles such as non-violence, respect for international law and South-South cooperation.
