Renewal of National Identity Card

For individuals wishing to renew their Uruguayan national identity card.

This procedure applies to persons born in Uruguay, children of Uruguayans born abroad under (Law No. 16.021), grandchildren of Uruguayans born abroad under (Law No. 19.362) and legal citizens holding a civic credential and the original letter of citizenship.

Requirements

  • Present your expired or damaged identity card on the day of the appointment. In case of theft or loss, the corresponding police report must be presented.
  • Pay the applicable fee. The exact amount will be indicated by email; please do not make any payment until your appointment has been confirmed. Please note that the amount may vary slightly depending on the monthly exchange rate between euros and U.S. dollars.
  • Only for legal citizens: certificate stating that no other nationality has been acquired. This document is issued at the Consulate and is subject to a fee.

First-time identity cards are not issued, and identity card renewals are not processed for legal residents through the Consulate.

The PIN code function of the identity card cannot be activated when the renewal is processed through the Consulate.

Once you have reviewed and complied with the requirements listed above, please request an appointment by sending an email to urubelgica@mrree.gub.uy, attaching all the required documentation for the procedure, including a photo of the identity card to be renewed.

Please note that once the application has been submitted at the Consulate, the document may take between 30 and 40 days to arrive from Uruguay.
