On March 25 and 26, Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin visited Brussels as part of efforts to strengthen ties between Uruguay, Mercosur, and the European Union. Over the course of two consecutive days, he held high-level meetings with key representatives of European institutions.

The first meeting, held on March 25, took place with Kaja Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The meeting focused on the roadmap for EU-CELAC relations and on the next concrete steps within the framework of the agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, whose implementation phase will take effect on May 1.

The following day, March 26, the Minister met with the President of the European Council, António Costa. Both agreed on the importance of making progress in implementing the EU-Mercosur and EU-CELAC agreements, reaffirming both sides’ commitment to a strong strategic partnership focused on concrete results.

May 1 is shaping up to be a milestone in this relationship, with the launch of the implementation phase of the EU-Mercosur partnership—a process that opens up new opportunities for political, trade, and development cooperation among the countries of the region.
