Uruguay and Belgium
Since their respective independence processes in the nineteenth century, both countries have shared structural characteristics and institutional affinities, including the central role of the rule of law, democratic stability, and an early commitment to international engagement and trade.
Over more than a century and a half, the bilateral relationship has developed steadily, with regular political dialogue and active cooperation in multilateral forums. Uruguay and Belgium share converging views in support of a rules-based international order, multilateralism, and respect for human rights and the rule of law.
In the economic sphere, Belgium has consolidated its position as a significant foreign investor in Uruguay, with a notable presence in the port and logistics sector, as well as in activities related to international trade and distribution, contributing to Uruguay’s integration into global value chains.
The bilateral relationship is further strengthened by the presence of a stable Uruguayan community in Belgium, which represents an important asset for ties between the two countries, fostering cultural, social, and human exchange and contributing to mutual understanding.
The Embassy of Uruguay in Brussels, together with the consulates in Antwerp and Genappe, works actively to deepen these ties, promote economic and cultural opportunities, and provide assistance to Uruguayan nationals.
