Below is a list of matters and procedures for which the Uruguayan Consulate may provide assistance.
Identity and Travel Documents
- Processing passports: issuing first-time passports and renewals.
- Issuing emergency passports.
- Issuing single-journey travel documents for return to Uruguay.
- Renewing national identity cards (not applicable to legal residents).
- Granting travel authorizations for minors with the appropriate legal consent.
Authorizations, Powers of Attorney and Notarial Acts
- Authorizing acts that may be carried out by public notaries.
- Authorizing general and special powers of attorney.
- Issuing authorization letters (Cartas Poder) for Banco de Previsión Social (BPS), Administradoras de Fondos de Ahorro Previsional (AFAP), or other institutions.
- Legalizing official documents to be submitted before Uruguayan authorities.
Registrations and Certificates
- Registering births, acknowledgments, and deaths.
- Obtaining certified and apostilled copies of birth, marriage, or death certificates.
- Issuing certificates of criminal records.
- Issuing life certificates for the Banco de Previsión Social (BPS) for citizens receiving pensions.
Other procedures
- Assisting with the registration of a personal user account with the Banco de Previsión Social (BPS).
- Assisting with procedures related to returning to Uruguay.
- Processing visas for foreign nationals traveling to Uruguay.
Consular Assistance and Protection
- Assisting individuals who have suffered accidents.
- Providing information and guidance to families in cases of accidents, deaths, or natural disasters.
- Arranging the transfer of ashes or mortal remains.
- Taking an interest in Uruguayan citizens who are detained or imprisoned and, under certain circumstances, conveying messages to their families.
- Safeguarding the interests of minors or legally incapacitated persons, particularly in matters related to guardianship or legal custody.
