Guide to Returning to Uruguay

Information for Uruguayan nationals residing in Canada who are considering returning to live in Uruguay. It includes guidance on required documentation, household relocation, bringing pets, benefits available to returning nationals, and other practical aspects of the return process.

 

The Consular Section of the Embassy of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay in Canada makes available to the Uruguayan community the Guide to Returning to Uruguay, published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Returning to Uruguay involves much more than moving personal belongings. It requires preparing personal and family documentation, planning the relocation, regularizing foreign documents, organizing financial, educational, employment and health-related matters, and becoming familiar with the benefits and procedures available before and after returning.

Those who meet the requirements established by the regulations in force may also qualify for the special regime governing the entry of personal and household goods, work tools and, under certain conditions, a personally owned vehicle.

Costs

Access to the Guide to Returning to Uruguay and the assistance provided by the Consular Section are free of charge.

However, depending on the circumstances of each case, the return process may involve costs related to other procedures or services, including:

  • Issuance or renewal of identity documents or passports.
  • Certifications, legalizations or other consular services, where applicable, in accordance with the current Consular Fee Schedule.
  • Obtaining documents issued by Canadian authorities.
  • Apostilles or authentications carried out by the competent Canadian authorities.
  • Official translations, where required under Uruguayan law.
  • International transportation of personal effects, vehicles or pets.
  • Freight, insurance, storage, customs clearance and other services contracted by the interested party.

The application of any benefits or exemptions provided for under the regulations governing return does not exempt the interested party from paying costs associated with services provided by third parties or foreign authorities.

Who is it for

  • Be a Uruguayan national. To qualify for the benefits provided under Article 76 of Law No. 18,250 (duty-free importation of household goods, work tools and, where applicable, a motor vehicle), applicants must demonstrate more than two years of continuous and permanent residence abroad.
