Official consular translations

The Consular Section of the Embassy of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay to Canada may provide official translations into Spanish of documents issued in Canada that must take effect in the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, provided that the document falls within the consular jurisdiction and that the Consulate knows the respective language. Foreign documents drafted in a language other than Spanish that must be submitted to public or private bodies in Uruguay must have a valid translation in accordance with Uruguayan regulations.

Valid translations for submission in Uruguay

Uruguay accepts the following as valid translations:

  • Those carried out in Uruguay by a public translator.
  • Those carried out abroad by the Consulate of the Republic corresponding to the country or jurisdiction where the document was issued.

Translations carried out by local translators abroad, without Uruguayan consular intervention, are not accepted in Uruguay, even if they are legalized or apostilled, except in the cases specifically provided for by current regulations.

When this procedure should be requested before the Consulate

This procedure may be requested when a person needs to submit in Uruguay a document issued in Canada in English and/or French.

It may also apply to procedures carried out directly before the Consular Section, such as passports, identity cards, visas or other consular procedures, when documentation that is not drafted in Spanish is submitted.

Required documentation

To request the official consular translation, the interested person must send by email:

Scanned copy of the document to be translated.

Identity document of the applicant.

Indication of the procedure or purpose for which the translation is required.

Contact details.

On the day of the appointment, the corresponding original document must be presented. The Consulate may request additional documentation if it deems it necessary.

How to apply

The request must be sent to the following email address: cdottawa@mrree.gub.uy

Once the documentation has been received, the Consular Section will verify whether it is appropriate to carry out the translation and will inform the interested person of the steps to follow.

Acceptance of the request will be subject to the nature of the document, its length, the language, the corresponding jurisdiction and the availability of the service.

Cost

The cost of the official consular translation is 75 Canadian dollars per page, up to a maximum of 5 pages.

For these purposes, one page is understood to be the equivalent of two sides.

The amount may vary by 1 or 2 Canadian dollars, equivalent to the exchange rate between the Canadian dollar and the U.S. dollar for the current month.

Payment will be made according to the instructions provided by the Consular Section and may be made by bank deposit or e-transfer to: cdottawa@mrree.gub.uy

Long documents

In the case of documents exceeding 5 pages, or documents which, due to their length, complexity or characteristics, cannot reasonably be translated by the consular office, the Consulate may decline the request.

In such cases, the interested person may be advised to have the translation carried out in Uruguay by a public translator, where applicable.

Important: It is not necessary to translate the apostille of a document, in accordance with the regime applicable to the Hague Apostille. The Consulate does not carry out translations into Spanish of documents intended to be submitted exclusively in other Spanish-speaking countries other than Uruguay.

Who is it for

  • For individuals who are in Canada and need to submit in Uruguay documents issued in Canada in a language other than Spanish, whether before public bodies, private institutions, or in the context of consular procedures.
  • It is also intended for those who must carry out procedures before the Consular Section of the Embassy of Uruguay in Canada and submit foreign documentation that requires translation into Spanish in order to take effect in Uruguay.
