In accordance with the Visa Admission Regime for Foreign Nationals of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, applicants are encouraged to verify in advance whether their nationality is exempt from the visa requirement by consulting the following link (Spanish only). In the case of Canada, holders of ordinary Canadian passports do not require a visa to enter Uruguay. However, holders of Canadian diplomatic and service passports are required to obtain a visa prior to travel. Please also note that holders of a Canadian Refugee Travel Document or any other Canadian travel document issued to persons granted international protection must obtain a visa in all cases before travelling to Uruguay, regardless of their nationality or whether that nationality would otherwise be exempt from the visa requirement.

Visa Categories

The main visa categories include:

  • Tourist
  • Business
  • Work
  • Study
  • Congresses, Conventions and Seminars
  • Other categories provided for under Uruguayan legislation

How to Apply

Applicants should submit a visa application by email to cdottawa@mrree.gub.uy, together with the basic supporting documentation, which generally includes:

  • Completed visa application form. Incomplete application forms will not be considered.
  • Recent digital photograph with a white background (5 cm × 5 cm) in .jpg format.
  • Valid passport (with a minimum validity of six months) in good condition.
  • Round-trip flight reservation and travel itinerary. At the time of application, a flight reservation is sufficient. Please note that if the visa is approved, a confirmed airline ticket will be required when the visa is affixed to the passport.
  • Proof of accommodation. If staying with friends or relatives, an invitation letter must be provided, indicating the name, identification document, address, and telephone number of the host in Uruguay. The host must be either a Uruguayan citizen or a permanent resident of Uruguay.
  • Proof of sufficient financial means to cover your expenses during your stay in Uruguay.

Once the documentation has been received and reviewed, the Consular Section may request any additional documents it considers necessary to assess the application. The appropriate visa category will then be determined, and the applicant will be informed of any additional requirements, if applicable, as well as the date and time of the consular interview.

Important Information

  • Applicants are encouraged to begin the visa application process at least 40 days before their intended date of travel.
  • A personal interview with a consular officer is part of the application process.
  • Submission of a visa application does not guarantee that a visa will be issued.
  • The competent authorities may request additional documentation during the assessment of the application.

Note:

  • The fee paid for the processing of a visa application covers the examination of the application and is non-refundable, even if the visa is denied.
  • Once the consular interview has been completed and the application file has been forwarded to the competent authorities in Uruguay, the review process currently takes between 20 and 30 business days (approximately 30 to 45 calendar days, depending on weekends and public holidays). Once a decision has been made, the applicant will be informed whether the visa has been approved, denied, or whether additional information or documentation is required to continue the assessment of the application. If these processing times are not compatible with the applicant's intended travel itinerary, it is recommended, whenever possible, to postpone the trip, as it cannot be guaranteed that a decision will be issued before the planned date of travel.
