Investment and Trade
The Embassy of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay to Canada promotes the strengthening of economic, trade, and investment ties between the two countries by facilitating institutional dialogue, the exchange of information, and the identification of opportunities for companies, investors, public bodies, and private sector stakeholders.
The Oriental Republic of Uruguay offers a stable, reliable, and open environment for investment, with legal certainty, strong institutions, an economy oriented toward international trade, and a strategic location in South America. The Embassy contributes to positioning Uruguay as a reliable partner, an investment destination, and a regional platform for companies interested in MERCOSUR and Latin America.
The bilateral economic and trade agenda includes trade in goods and services, investment, the promotion of Uruguayan products, customs cooperation, supply chains, technology, innovation, sustainability, food, agribusiness, creative industries, and opportunities linked to strategic sectors.
In 2025, the Oriental Republic of Uruguay and Canada agreed to move forward with the modernization of the 1999 Agreement on the Promotion and Protection of Investments, with the aim of strengthening economic cooperation, trade, and bilateral investment.
In June 2026, both countries signed the Agreement on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Customs Matters, within the framework of the sessions of the Council of the World Customs Organization held in Brussels. This instrument contributes to strengthening cooperation between the customs authorities of both countries, facilitating the exchange of information, and supporting the prevention, investigation, and combating of customs offences.
At the regional level, the Oriental Republic of Uruguay is a full member of MERCOSUR, a bloc that maintains an agenda of economic and trade dialogue with Canada. In May 2026, the 10th Round of MERCOSUR–Canada trade negotiations was held in Toronto, during which significant progress was recorded in several chapters of the negotiation.
The Embassy also carries out trade promotion and country image activities. These include the tasting of Uruguayan wines organized on the occasion of the opening of the 234th Session of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization; participation in the Food, Fuel, Fertilizer Global Summit 2025 in Regina, Saskatchewan; and participation in Web Summit Vancouver 2025, where Uruguayan technology companies presented national innovation to the global technology ecosystem.
These activities help project Uruguay as a reliable supplier of food, agribusiness products, services, knowledge, innovation, and talent, while also strengthening ties with Canadian stakeholders in strategic sectors such as technology, agribusiness, resources, logistics, sustainability, and international trade.
