The Embassy of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay to Canada celebrated in Ottawa the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of National Independence with the traditional ceremony of raising the National Flag at City Hall and a reception at the Embassy’s premises.

The event brought together compatriots residing in Ottawa, Gatineau, and the Greater Montreal Region, local authorities, representatives of the diplomatic corps, and friends of Uruguay, in a celebration of our history, identity, and traditions, as well as the bonds of friendship that unite Uruguay and Canada.

The reception featured a performance specially recorded for this occasion by Rubén Rada: a tribute to the history, identity, and spirit of Uruguay, conveyed through his unmistakable voice, emotion, talent, and joy.

A display of amethysts, along with pizzetas, mini Canadian chivitos, pastafrolas, and Uruguayan wines, accompanied the gathering, evoking the flavors, colors, and memories of our homeland.

As the perfect closing to a day dedicated to memory, togetherness, and the future, we thank the City of Ottawa for joining our Bicentennial by lighting the city letters in the colors of our National Flag and flying the Uruguayan flag at City Hall.

A gathering that combined history, identity, and fraternity on this 200th anniversary of the Declaration of National Independence.
