Meeting with the Uruguayan Community in Halifax

The Ambassador of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay to Canada, Gustavo Aníbal Álvarez Goyoaga, held a meeting with members of the Uruguayan community residing in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The activity was organized by the Consular Section of the Embassy of Uruguay in Ottawa, with the support of the Consulate General of Uruguay in Montreal, the office responsible for providing consular assistance to the Uruguayan community in Halifax and in the other provinces within its jurisdiction.
The meeting helped strengthen ties between the Embassy, Uruguay’s consular network in Canada, and Uruguayan nationals residing on Canada’s Atlantic coast. It also provided an opportunity to exchange views on the local community, its consular needs, and the possibilities for continuing to promote spaces for dialogue, communication, and institutional support.
According to the 2021 Canadian Census, 20 people of Uruguayan origin reside in Halifax. On this occasion, it was possible to bring together 12 of them, representing a significant portion of a small but especially valuable community that helps keep alive the ties with the Oriental Republic of Uruguay in this region of Canada.
Halifax also has a history of relations with Uruguay, including Uruguayan honorary consular presence in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This historical dimension reinforces the importance of continuing to cultivate the ties between Uruguay and the Uruguayan community in Nova Scotia.
The Embassy of Uruguay in Canada reaffirms its commitment to working in coordination with the country’s Consulates General and Honorary Consulates, in order to provide assistance, guidance, and consular services to Uruguayan citizens and foreign nationals throughout Canadian territory.
