What Can the Consulate Do for You?
The Consulate may assist and provide guidance to Uruguayan citizens who reside in or are temporarily located within its jurisdiction, in accordance with applicable regulations and the responsibilities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay.
Among other functions, the Consulate may:
- Process passports.
- Issue emergency passports valid for a single trip.
- Process travel authorizations for minors with the legally required consent of the holders of parental authority.
- Authorize acts that may be performed by public notaries, in accordance with applicable regulations.
- Legalize official documents to be submitted to authorities of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, when applicable.
- Send certificates of existence to the Social Security Bank for citizens receiving pension benefits.
- Assist persons involved in accidents.
- Inform relatives or close contacts about accidents, deaths or disasters, and provide guidance.
- Take an interest in Uruguayan nationals who are detained or imprisoned and, under certain circumstances, transmit messages to relatives.
- Protect the interests of minors or legally incapacitated persons, particularly in matters related to guardianship or curatorship.
- Help ensure that Uruguayan citizens subject to legal proceedings have adequate defense and due process.
- Request local authorities to help locate persons.
- Attend to the interests of Uruguayan nationals in inheritance matters arising from death.
- Seek to communicate with relatives or close contacts to inform them of a person’s situation and needs.
- Provide guidance regarding legal, medical, notarial or other local assistance services.
The Consulate cannot:
- Act as a party in judicial proceedings or secure exemption from imprisonment.
- Provide legal advice or initiate legal proceedings on behalf of private individuals.
- Obtain treatment different from that provided to nationals of the host country in hospitals, prisons or other local institutions.
- Perform tasks corresponding to travel agencies, airlines, banks or other private entities.
- Request an extension of a person’s stay as a tourist abroad.
- Provide tickets or means to return to the Oriental Republic of Uruguay or continue travel to another destination, except in very special repatriation circumstances.
- Provide money or pay bills, including hotel, legal, medical or any other private expenses.
- Arrange accommodation, residence, employment or work permits.
- Act as guarantor or surety.
- Regularize a person’s immigration status before local authorities.
Who is it for
- For Uruguayan citizens who reside or are temporarily located within the jurisdiction of the Consular Section of the Embassy of Uruguay in Canada, their family members or close contacts, as well as foreign nationals who require consular guidance or assistance related to procedures or matters concerning the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, in accordance with current regulations.
