International Day of Women in Diplomacy (24th of June)

Historically, diplomacy has been a predominantly male domain. However, the growing participation of women—both in Uruguay and around the world—has enriched diplomatic practice with new perspectives and approaches.
Despite the progress made, challenges remain: structural barriers, difficulties in balancing work and family life, a lack of female role models in senior positions, and the persistence of gender stereotypes and biases that still affect the careers of many women diplomats.
During its 76th session, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed by consensus June 24 as the International Day of Women in Diplomacy. Through Resolution A/RES/76/269, the Assembly encouraged Member States, United Nations organizations, non-governmental groups, academic institutions, and associations of women diplomats to commemorate the day with activities that promote education and public awareness.
In our country, the steady increase of women in the Foreign Service and their presence in high-ranking positions are important achievements—but not enough. Uruguay remains committed to advancing toward a more equitable and representative Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where merit and vocation are fully recognized and valued for all.
From the Embassy of Uruguay in Sweden, we reaffirm our commitment to gender equality in diplomacy: “When all women advance, society moves forward.”
