Sweden's National Day

Uruguay participated in the official ceremonies marking Sweden’s National Day, held at Skansen and the Royal Palace

On Friday, June 6, the Embassy of Uruguay had the great honor of participating in the official ceremonies commemorating the National Day of the Kingdom of Sweden, a landmark occasion that celebrates two foundational milestones in the country’s history: the election of Gustav Vasa as King in 1523, marking the emergence of the modern Swedish state, and the promulgation of the Instrument of Government (Regeringsformen) in 1809, one of the constitutional cornerstones of today’s Swedish democracy.

Central Ceremony at Skansen

The main ceremony took place in the afternoon at the Solliden stage in Skansen, Stockholm. It was presided over by Their Majesties King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, with the presence of Crown Princess Victoria, other members of the Royal Family, Prime Minister Mr. Ulf Kristersson, members of the ministerial cabinet, representatives of Parliament, and members of the accredited diplomatic corps.

Official speeches were delivered by both the King and the Prime Minister. Their remarks emphasized democratic values, freedom as a historical and identity-shaping axis of the nation, the importance of collective effort for national development, and the need for unity in diversity. King Carl XVI Gustaf also underlined Sweden’s solidarity with Ukraine and the defense of fundamental values in the face of current challenges.

The program included the raising of the national flag, the performance of the royal and national anthems, the symbolic presentation of flags to outstanding organizations, and a cultural segment featuring renowned figures from the Swedish music scene, including Ola Salo, Peter Jöback, Sofia Karlsson, Seinabo Sey, the Adolf Fredrik Children’s Choir, and the Royal Swedish Army Band.

Reception at the Royal Palace

Following the ceremony, the Head of Mission attended the official reception hosted by the Royal Family at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. On that occasion, formal greetings were exchanged with members of the Royal Court, officials from the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and representatives of other diplomatic missions.

Diplomatic Outreach and Bilateral Agenda

Particular emphasis is placed on the alignment and complementarity of institutional initiatives in the capitals of Sweden and Uruguay. In parallel with the Embassy’s presence in Stockholm, a conference organized by the Embassy of Sweden in Argentina was held in Montevideo, at the Hotel Carrasco. The event focused on innovation, health, energy, and sustainable transport. Uruguay’s participation — including the presence of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs — was very positively received, reflecting the country's active engagement with the bilateral agenda.

The coordination of both events — the commemoration in Sweden and the visibility in Uruguay — projects a coherent image of Uruguay as a reliable, active, and committed partner. These joint actions strengthen the country’s diplomatic strategy, enhance its profile in the Kingdom of Sweden, and position Uruguay as a relevant interlocutor in high-value areas, both politically and institutionally, as well as in technical and sectoral dimensions.
