Renewal of Uruguayan identity card

Requirements and necessary documentation to renew a Uruguayan identity card.

It is aimed to: 

Persons born in Uruguay, sons and daughters of Uruguayans born abroad (Law 16.021), grandsons and granddaughters of Uruguayans born abroad (Law 19.362) and legal citizens with an original Civic Credential and Citizenship Card.


Requirements: 


Renewal of expired or damaged Uruguayan identity card

  1. Copy of your Uruguayan identity card (it does not matter if it is expired).
  2. Uruguayan birth certificate.
  3. Application form (find it at the bottom of this page).
  4. Valid identity document of father and/or mother (in the case of minors).

Renewal of Uruguayan identity card due to theft or loss

The same documentation detailed in section  Renewal of expired or damaged Uruguayan identity card, must be submitted, along with the following:

  1. Report on the incident to the local authorities. If the victim is a minor, their legal representatives will be authorized to sign the report.
  2. If you are unable to file a police report (for example, because you are in an irregular situation), you may sign an Affidavit at the Consulate.
  3. A denounce at the Uruguayan Public Security Management System (Sistema de Gestión de Seguridad Pública de Uruguay) this will be made at the same time of the of the renewal at the Consulate. 

Note: Minors must always attend the appointment in the company of one or both parents, who must authorize the procedure in person.  

All the aforementioned documentation must be sent to cdestocolmo@mrree.gub.uy in PDF or JPG format.

Once the complete documentation is received, you will be given an appointment to visit the Consulate in Stockholm to continue your process.


On the day of the appointment, you must present all the requested documentation.

Cost: $18 USD approximately (Equivalents in Swedish crowns according to the exchange rate valid on the day the appointment is granted).
