90% connected persons
In the last decade, the use of the Internet among Uruguayans not only became more widespread, but it has also intensified. According to the data from the Survey of Use of Information Technology and Communications (EUTIC for its acronym in Spanish), 90% of the surveyed people report having used the Internet in the last three months, and 83% report using it on a daily basis. This means that the vast majority (92%) of Internet users use the Internet daily, while in 2010 only more than half of them (57%) used the Internet daily. With regard to 2019, it is worth highlighting the increase in the daily use of the Internet which went from 79% to 83% in 2022.
This report also underlines that the main use of the Internet is communication-related, mainly to participate in social networks. In this regard, most people use it to make calls or video calls.
The use of the Internet for entertainment increased in connection with 2019: in 2022, 81% of the persons use it to listen to music and watch TV series or movies.
Moreover, it has increased the transactional use of the Internet in connection with the use of home banking, online shopping, medical appointment scheduling, and online payment of governmental administrative formalities or services.
Employees working remotely increased significantly in 2022 regarding 2019; almost 1 out of 5 Internet users worked remotely in the last three months.
Other uses of the Internet are related to the online interaction of persons with the educational center they attend (58%) or with a digital government activity in the last three months (68%), including in this last case searching for information on the government or carrying out online formalities, among others.
