Transportation of human remains

To initiate the procedure, the following must be submitted:

• A letter signed by a relative of the deceased requesting authorization for the transportation of the remains to Uruguay.
• A death certificate issued by the competent authority and duly apostilled.
• A copy of the deceased person’s identity document or passport, preferably a Uruguayan document if they held one.
• A certificate of embalming and hermetic sealing of the coffin, issued by the funeral services provider and duly apostilled.
• Sanitary authorization for the transportation of the remains, issued by the competent Chinese authority.
• A certificate indicating whether the death was caused by an infectious or contagious disease.
• Information on how and when the transportation will take place, including the itinerary and flight number.

Documents issued exclusively in Chinese must be accompanied by their corresponding Spanish translation.

In China, international transportation must be arranged through an authorized funeral services provider, which will be responsible for preparing the remains and completing the sanitary and customs formalities required for their departure from the country.

The entry of human remains into Uruguay also requires prior authorization from the Ministry of Public Health (Ministerio de Salud Pública - MSP). This procedure must be coordinated by the responsible funeral services provider in Uruguay.

Transportation of ashes

To initiate the procedure, the following must be submitted:

• A letter signed by a relative of the deceased requesting the transportation of the ashes to Uruguay.
• A death certificate issued by the competent authority and duly apostilled.
• A cremation certificate.
• A copy of the deceased person’s identity document or passport.
• The identity document of the person who will transport the ashes.
• Travel itinerary.
• Any sanitary or customs documentation required by the Chinese authorities for the departure of the ashes.

Documents issued exclusively in Chinese must be accompanied by their corresponding Spanish translation.

The entry of human ashes into Uruguay does not require prior sanitary authorization. However, the airline must be consulted regarding its transportation conditions and any requirements applicable in countries of transit.

How is the procedure initiated?

The documentation must first be submitted to the Consulate by email. Once it has been reviewed, the interested person will be informed whether any additional documentation is required, and the necessary consular procedures will be coordinated.

Applicants are advised to contact the Consulate before arranging transportation or purchasing tickets.

Cost

The consular procedure is free of charge.

Expenses associated with funeral services, certificates, apostilles, translations and transportation must be borne by the relatives or responsible persons.

Consular jurisdiction

The Consulate General of Uruguay in Guangzhou accepts applications relating to deaths that occurred in Guangdong, Fujian, Hunan, Hainan, Guizhou and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

If the death occurred outside this jurisdiction, the corresponding Uruguayan consular office must be contacted, according to the Consular Map (Mapa Consular).
