Who can carry out this procedure?

  • People born in Uruguay
  • Children of Uruguayans born abroad (Law 16.021)
  • Grandchildren of Uruguayans born abroad (Law 19.362)
  • Legal citizens

Requirements 

For people of legal age:

In case of renewal (expired, expiring, deteriorated or full page passport):
  • Original Uruguayan passport expired or about to expire/deteriorated/pages filled
  • Uruguayan identity card (if you have one)
  • Valid Uruguayan birth certificate (issued less than 30 days)
  • Certificate of Judicial Record (Police Check), issued by the Australian Federal Police, apostilled by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and translated into Spanish (maximum validity: 90 days)
  • Application form (downloadable at the bottom of the page)

The translation of the Police Check into Spanish is done at the Consular Section, at a cost of 84 Australian dollars. The amount may vary depending on the current exchange rate between the Australian dollar and the US dollar.

In case of loss or theft:
  • Police report to the Australian police
  • Complaint in the Public Security Management System of Uruguay (it is done at the time of the procedure)
  • Uruguayan identity card (if you have one)
  • Valid Uruguayan birth certificate (issued less than 30 days)
  • Valid Police Check, apostilled and translated into Spanish (maximum validity: 90 days)
  • Application form (downloadable at the bottom of the page)
Legal citizens must submit:
  • Passport (page corresponding to the issuance, showing a photo and the sheet showing the citizen law)
  • In case of loss, file the corresponding police report
  • Identity card
  • Police Check, apostilled and translated into Spanish (maximum validity: 90 days)
  • Citizenship Letter
  • Civic credential (when more than three years have passed since the issuance of the respective document)
  • Birth certificate registered in the Civil Registry
  • Affidavit of not having acquired a third citizenship in the case of residents abroad

For minors:

  • Expired Uruguayan passport, valid for less than one year, damaged or with full pages
  • Uruguayan identity card (if you have one)
  • Valid Uruguayan birth certificate (issued less than 30 days)
  • Valid identity document of mother and father
  • Application form (downloadable at the bottom of the page)

The translation of the Police Check into Spanish is done at the Consular Section, at a cost of 84 Australian dollars. The amount may vary depending on the current exchange rate between the Australian dollar and the US dollar.

On the day of the appointment, the original requested documentation must be presented.

Authorisation for minors: 

Minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian, who must authorise the procedure in person. 

If a parent or guardian cannot be present, the absence must be justified on a case-by-case basis:

  • If the parent or guardian is in Uruguay: apply for a minor's permit for passport renewal at the Department of Travel Documentation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1384 Cuareim Street, Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.).
  • If the parent or guardian is abroad: apply for a minor's permit authorising the renewal of the passport for the first time at the Uruguayan Consulate closest to the place where the parent is.
  • In the event of the death of one of the parents: a death certificate must be presented. If it is Uruguayan, with issuance of less than 30 days. If it is foreign, with up to 1 year of validity, duly legalised or apostilled. 

Important:  The minor's permit must be obtained before requesting the appointment for the procedure. The procedure may not be carried out without such authorisation.

How do I start the procedure?

  1. Complete the application form (downloadable at the bottom of the page)
  2. Gather the required documentation, depending on your situation (age, renewal or loss, legal citizenship, etc.)
  3. Request an appointment by sending an email to: uruaustralia@mrree.gub.uy, attaching the form, the corresponding documentation, and indicating in the subject of the email the requested procedure.
  4. Present yourself in person with the complete documentation on the day of the procedure.
  5. Cost: 56 Australian dollars for renewal and 84 Australian dollars for Spanish translation of the Police Check. The amount may vary depending on the current exchange rate between the Australian Dollar and U.S. Dollar. Payment is made in cash on the day of the appointment.
