Renewal of Uruguayan identity card
Who can carry out this procedure?
- People born in Uruguay
- Children of Uruguayans born abroad (Law 16.021)
- Grandchildren of Uruguayans born abroad (Law 19.362)
- Legal citizens
The issuance of identity cards for the first time can only be done at the National Directorate of Civil Identification, in Uruguay.
Requirements
For people of legal age:
- Expired or damaged identity card
- Application form (downloadable at the bottom of the page)
In case of loss or theft:
- Police report to the Australian police
- Application form (downloadable at the bottom of the page)
Legal Citizens:
- Identity Card
- Citizenship Letter
- Civic Credential (when more than three years have passed since the issuance of the respective document)
- Birth certificate registered in the Civil Registry
- Affidavit of not having acquired a third citizenship in case of residents abroad

For minors:
- Expired or damaged identity card
- Valid Uruguayan birth certificate (issued less than 30 days)
- Valid identity document of the responsible adult
- In case of loss or theft: police report to the Australian police

Minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian, who must authorize the procedure in person.
How do I start the procedure?
- Complete the application form (downloadable at the bottom of the page)
- Gather the required documentation, depending on your situation (age, renewal or loss, legal citizenship, etc.)
- Request an appointment by sending an email to: uruaustralia@mrree.gub.uy, attaching the form, the corresponding documentation, and indicating in the subject of the email the requested procedure.
- Present yourself in person on the day of the renewal with complete documentation.
- Cost: 28 Australian dollars. The amount may vary according to the current exchange rate between the Australian dollar and the US dollar. Payment is made in cash on the day of the appointment.
