Canberra / Spanish Language Day at the National Archives of Australia

On Wednesday, 20 May, the Embassy of Uruguay in Australia participated in the celebration of Spanish Language Day at the National Archives of Australia, together with 12 Spanish-speaking embassies and the Instituto Cervantes in Sydney.
The event celebrated Spanish as a vibrant global language capable of connecting cultures, histories and communities across generations and borders. A language that not only brings together millions of people around the world, but also represents identity, creativity, memory and connection.
During the event, the Ambassador presented an award to the winner of the Uruguayan segment of a game on popular expressions game from across the Spanish-speaking world, an activity that highlighted the richness and cultural diversity of the Spanish language.
The award included the book Greg Mortimer: Log of a rescue, by Uruguayan author Mariana Zabala, a work inspired by a story that deeply connects Uruguay and Australia and reflects the talent and international reach of Uruguayan literature.
The event also provided an opportunity to explore historical documents preserved at the National Archives of Australia that testify to decades of relations between Uruguay and Australia, including diplomatic exchanges, technical cooperation and connections built across generations. Discover more about these shared stories in our special article on Uruguay at the National Archives of Australia here.
We extend our special thanks to the National Archives of Australia for opening this space for cultural exchange and for preserving a historical memory that strengthens the ties between our countries.
At the Embassy, we continue promoting Spanish as a bridge for connection, dialogue and culture, strengthening the links between Uruguay, Australia and the Spanish-speaking community.
