Official Visit of Vice Minister Valeria Csukasi to Australia

The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs carried out an intensive agenda in Canberra and Sydney, strengthening the ties between Uruguay and Australia. During her visit, she met with Australian authorities to address a comprehensive agenda on foreign policy and gender in diplomacy, as well as discuss sustainable agri-food production and engage with the Uruguayan community, both in person and virtually. She also participated in the celebration of Uruguay’s National Day and 200 Years of Independence, featuring live tango, and concluded her agenda with the signing of a social security agreement that will benefit citizens of both countries.
Between August 23 and 26, 2025, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Valeria Csukasi carried out an intensive program of work in Canberra and Sydney, strengthening the ties between Uruguay and Australia.
 
The visit began at the Uruguayan Club of Sydney, where she shared a warm meeting with the diaspora. She also participated in a virtual interview with representatives of the Uruguayan community in Australia, highlighting the bonds that unite us across distances and recognizing with pride one of the largest Uruguayan communities, with over 20,000 compatriots counting first, second, and third generations.
 
In the official domain, Vice Minister Csukasi held meetings with Australian government authorities, including the Minister for Trade and Tourism, Senator Don Farrell, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Matt Thistlethwaite, and Deputy Secretary of the Trade and Investment Group, Ambassador George Mina. She also met with the Australian team responsible for Antarctic affairs, discussing ways to strengthen cooperation.
 
She also met with the Hon Kevin Hogan MP, Shadow Minister for Trade and Tourism, exchanging views on cooperation and coordination efforts within the Cairns Group of the WTO.
 
The Vice Minister held a meeting with Ambassador Katrina Cooper, who has served at the highest levels of the Australian government with extensive foreign policy experience, to discuss the Women in Leadership Strategy, aimed at promoting equality and dismantling barriers within the Australian foreign service. Her experience provides valuable insights to strengthen equal opportunity policies within Uruguayan diplomacy.
 
With David Jochinke, President of the National Farmers’ Federation, she discussed common challenges in the agri-food sector and the shared commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible production.
 
At Parliament House, she met Senator Andrew McLachlan, to whom she expressed her gratitude for promoting the Australia–Uruguay Parliamentary Group.
 
Vice Minister Csukasi also participated in the celebration of Uruguay’s National Day and 200 Years of Independence in Canberra, alongside Australian authorities, parliamentarians, and the Uruguayan community, in a cultural evening that included a live tango performance.
 
The agenda concluded with the signing of the Social Security Agreement with Australia’s Minister for Social Services, Tanya Plibersek, a milestone in the bilateral relation that will directly benefit citizens of both countries. Uruguay thus becomes the 33rd country to establish such an agreement with Australia and the second Latin American nation to do so.
