Return to Uruguay – Article 76, Law No. 18.250

For Uruguayan citizens who wish to return to Uruguay permanently and who have lived abroad for more than two consecutive years.

If you are considering returning to Uruguay to establish permanent residence, either alone or accompanied by your family, you may benefit from the provisions of Article 76 of Law No. 18.250, provided that you meet the requirements established by the law and its corresponding regulatory decree.

Under this regime, and in compliance with the applicable regulations, the interested party may import once, free of foreign exchange procedures and exempt from all customs duties, taxes, or related charges: household goods and personal effects furnishing their residence, tools, machinery, equipment, and instruments related to the exercise of their profession, trade, or occupation and one motor vehicle owned by the applicant.

It is recommended that you contact the Consulate well in advance and initiate the procedure at least one month before your final departure date.

If you meet the established requirements, please contact the Consulate by email at urubelgica@mrree.gub.uy, attaching a photo of your Uruguayan identity document, in order to receive the Return Manual, a document containing further information about this procedure prepared specifically for individuals who wish to complete it.

This procedure is free of charge.
