Inmujeres outlined progress on the government’s commitments to gender equality at the main event on 8 March
On Monday 9 March, Inmujeres held its main event to mark International Women’s Day, during which it presented the progress made in the government’s first year in office regarding gender equality.
During the event, Xavier presented an account of the 90 commitments made by the Uruguayan State in March 2025, which resulted in 139 specific actions promoted by various central government bodies.
“Of these 139 actions, spread across the six main areas we have just mentioned, 82% are either in progress or have already been completed, with less than 16% of the committed actions yet to be initiated,” she noted.
The director of Inmujeres highlighted that the government had decided to place special emphasis during this period on women’s economic autonomy, in line with the institutional slogan for the five-year period: When all women advance, society advances. Gender equality, a state commitment.
Six pillars for equality policies
The accountability report presented by Inmujeres organised the government’s actions into six thematic pillars that structure public policy on gender equality:
- Consolidation of the National Gender System.
- Cultural transformation, inclusive education and women’s participation.
- Women’s economic autonomy and the social reorganisation of care.
- A life free from gender-based violence.
- Comprehensive health, and sexual and reproductive rights.
- Critical contexts.
Among the notable advances, Xavier mentioned the strengthening of the institutional framework for gender, the creation and consolidation of gender units within state bodies, the development of sectoral plans that incorporate this perspective, and the establishment of monitoring and evaluation systems to track public policies.
“This set of instruments reflects a State that is making progress in mainstreaming gender equality across its public policies, consolidating a strategic agenda that recognises sustainable development, social justice and democracy as necessary conditions for the full guarantee of women’s rights,” she stated.
