Birth registration at the Consulate

Birth registration with the Uruguayan Civil Registry through the Consulate.

It is aimed to:

Children of Uruguayans (Law 16.021) and grandchildren of Uruguayans (Law 19.362) interested in obtaining Uruguayan nationality and who were born in Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
 

Requirements:  

  1. Birth certificate of your son/daughter duly apostilled.

In the case of:

  • In Sweden you must request a “Familjebevis o Uttdrag av folkbokföringregister” as a birth certificate, which is requested in the name of the person to be registered. This document details family ties. You can obtain the document from the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) website, and it must contain the stamp and signature of a Skatteverket official.   • For Norway, you must request a “Fødselsattest” as a birth certificate, detailing family ties. This document can be requested on the Norwegian Tax Agency (Skatteetaten) website and must contain the stamp and signature of a Skatteetaten official.   • To obtain birth, baptism, personal, or name certificates in Denmark, detailing family ties, you must contact the parish office where you live. You can request a certificate with a digital signature at Life in Denmark, and receive it by email, or request that the parish office  issued a certificate with a signature/seal.

  2. Identity documents of both parents scanned (Uruguayan identity cards, Uruguayan passport, or foreign passport).
  3. Uruguayan Birth Certificate of mother and/or father born in Uruguay (Law 16.021).
  4. Birth certificate of grandfather and/or grandmother (if you are a grandson of Uruguayans, Law 19,362), in the case of they are the ones who transmit the nationality. The birth certificate of the applicant's parents must also be submitted to prove the parentage (If the birth certificate of the applicant's parents is foreign, it must be duly apostilled).
  5. Two witnesses over 18 years of age; they should present a valid identification documents Uruguayan ID and/or passport, that they will prove the parentage. 

NOTE: For the Birth Registration process for minors, we try to provide all guarantees to the applicants, which is why the presence of both parents is suggested, as well as the physical presence of the minor.

How to obtain the Hague Apostille for foreign documents to be valid in Uruguay, in the case of: 

Sweden:             at the Notary Public

Denmark:           at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Norway:              at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The County Governors (Fylkesmannen).

All the aforementioned documentation must be sent to cdestocolmo@mrree.gub.uy in PDF or JPG format.

Once the complete documentation is received, you will be given an appointment to visit the Consulate in Stockholm to continue your process.


On the day of the appointment, you must present all the requested documentation, along with both witnesses and both parents (if the person to be registered is a minor). 

With this procedure, you or your child will be automatically registered in Uruguay. You will receive a Birth Certificate with which you can apply to issue a passport.

It is important to remark that the success of the process will be subject to the proper functioning of the National Civil Registry's system, which is under the General Directorate of the Civil Registry.
