100% Connected companies

In Uruguay, digital technologies have had a substantial impact on all dimensions of the economic development in recent years, having an impact on the ways people and companies work, produce, distribute, and consume. Digital development is essential to improve the country's productivity and competitiveness, and it is an opportunity to generate positive impacts on economic development. It is necessary to promote innovation and integration of all the parties involved, to provide the conditions for the development of new business models and better employment opportunities.

Currently, the country presents solid conditions to foster competitiveness improvement based on innovation processes and the advancement of the digital economy.  It has an advanced connectivity infrastructure, strengthened specific skills, incorporation of technology in all productive sectors, a strategic vision, and the articulation of actions of all actors for its development within and outside borders.

The development of innovative projects aimed at solving competitiveness problems in companies in all sectors is promoted and financed through specialized agencies. By the end of 2019 a law that encourages entrepreneurship among young people, the creation of simplified joint-stock companies and collective financing was passed. This will be a boost for many new companies.

Mechanisms to promote the digital economy have been consolidated, with an emphasis on creating greater added value, to increase productivity, growth, and innovation in productive sectors. In particular, a digitalization strategy for small and medium-sized companies has been designed, which has a significant impact on the economy as a whole.

Relevant to mention is the development of foreign trade management, which is carried out through a digital platform that allows optimizing and unifying all the import, export, or transit documentation necessary for an operation. Currently, eight out of ten services related to foreign trade can be performed online.

The incorporation of technology in the processes has improved the capacity for prevention, mitigation and attention to environmental impacts and emergencies, and has made possible the development of monitoring systems for the quality of strategic natural resources.
