62% of Internet users shopping online
Performing business and banking activities online allows people to save time, as they do not need to move anywhere else to check their statement of account, or purchase, or sell goods and services. Moreover, it offers greater flexibility and comfort to people, as they may compare prices and characteristics of products and services of different suppliers in the comfort of their own homes.
It is possible to perform a wide variety of economic activities and its exploitation shall depend on the skills of Internet users and on their access to electronic means of payment, among other things.
In connection with online shopping, according to the results of the Survey of Use of Information Technology and Communications (EUTIC for its acronym in Spanish), almost 1 out of 3 Internet users state to have purchased and paid online for diverse services, digit which represents a slight increase regarding 2019. To a smaller extent, Internet users requested transportation online, shopped on the Internet without paying online, bought tickets, and made reservations online. Lastly, 13% declare to have sold goods or services on the Internet, and a smaller percentage (2%) declare to have rented their home on the Internet.
When considering all activities related to online shopping, there is an increase in connection with 2019.
EUTIC highlights the percentage of Internet users that made any of the abovementioned activities in connection with online shopping, based on gender, age, educational level, region, and income quintile. In 2019, 53% had bought something online, a number which amounts to 62% in 2022. There are no differences based on gender in this activity, but there are, in fact, based on age groups, in favor of young adults. While 83% of Internet users aged 20 to 34 shopped online, this number decreased to 33% among those aged 65 or older. On the other hand, there are significant differences regarding their educational level: while most Internet users of high educational levels purchased online in the last three months, this digit is 34% for those with a low educational level.
