A research infrastructure dedicated to advanced histology, optical microscopy and electron microscopy, supporting studies from cells to tissues and biomaterials. It is owned and funded by i3S/Universidade do Porto and national science funding. HEMS integrates the i3S Imaging Platforms and participates in European bioimaging networks such as PPBI. and European Microscopy Society.
HEMS has growing experience in international RI cooperation, particularly through participation in European research networks, shared microscopy platforms, and EU‑funded initiatives that promote harmonized protocols, training, and transnational access. While it has an established record of collaboration within European infrastructures, this represents its first cooperation with CELAC, marking an important step toward broader global engagement.

Superior Research Technician Level III/ Head coordinator. Advanced Biomaterials and Biointerfaces Characterization scientific platform, Porto. The Advanced Biomaterials and Biointerfaces Characterization (ABC) scientific platform at the i3S – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health operates in the area of biomaterials, biointerfaces, nanotechnology, and regenerative medicine.
Financed by the AI2 (ex – FCT) and European programs, the access to equipment and expert staff support is available to the i3S users, academia, and industry on a fee-for-service basis. At the networking level, the ABC is strongly integrated into PPBI – Portuguese Platform of Bioimaging and at FOCUS-4R. The ABC, being part of the PPBI i3S node, provides support in experimental design, training in equipment use and image analysis, and scientific guidance for research projects. It contributes to training initiatives and skills development. Staff participate in mobility programs (e.g., at EMBL through Euro-BioImaging EVOLVE). Within FOCUS-4R (2026–2030), ABC staff will be hosted by CICbiomaGUNE (Spain) and Ocean TuniCell (Norway). In turn, ABC–i3S will host staff from these and other consortium institutions, with activities focused on training, mobility, and method development.
